WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM NIJMEGEN?
Nijmegen is -my- town! Located on the southern bank of the river ‘Waal’. To the north of the river you’ll find the village ‘Lent’. I lived in this place until October 2019. Nijmegen-Lent is therfore the starting point for me! Nijmegen has a long history that goes back more than 2000 years. Nijmegen claims to be the oldest city in the current Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005.
The city has a lot to offer. Numerous cozy hotels, bistros, a lovely city park and plenty of opportunities to pick up the greenery in one of the surrounding forests. Once a year, Nijmegen celebrates its summer festivities ‘zomerfeesten’, one of the country’s biggest festivities. This coincides with the “4-daagse” (four-day) festival. A festivity in which participants walk 30-50KM per day for 4 days. During the festivities the city is turned into a vibrant epicenter of partying and it is flooded by (inter)national tourists. When you stay in the Netherlands during the 3rd week of July: be sure to immerse yourself in the coziness but make sure you book a hotel, hostel or homestay well in advance!
